PRP & PRF Microneedling

Your own platelet growth factors, delivered through hundreds of micro-channels — collagen induction amplified.

Medically reviewed by Richard Maxwell, MD ·

PRP and PRF microneedling combines two proven collagen-induction modalities: micro-channel skin penetration plus your own platelet-rich growth factors. We draw a small blood sample, concentrate the platelets, and deliver the resulting plasma into the dermis through hundreds of controlled microchannels per second. The result is faster healing, stronger collagen and elastin production, and more dramatic skin rejuvenation than microneedling alone — especially for acne scarring, fine lines, and overall skin texture.

During a PRP or PRF microneedling session, we draw approximately 10–20ml of blood and centrifuge it to separate platelet-rich plasma (or platelet-rich fibrin, for PRF). After numbing cream is applied to the face, the microneedling pen creates hundreds of controlled microchannels per second across the treatment area. Your concentrated plasma is applied to the skin throughout the procedure — the microchannels act as direct delivery routes for growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF, EGF, IGF) to reach the dermis where new collagen and elastin form. Most patients schedule 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart for primary skin concerns, with annual maintenance afterward. Mild redness for 24–48 hours, similar to microneedling alone — patients typically schedule on a Friday and are presentable by Monday. Contraindications include platelet disorders, active facial infections including herpes outbreaks, blood-thinning medications, and certain autoimmune conditions. We screen at consultation.

Key Benefits

1Combines microneedling with your own platelet-rich plasma — autologous, allergy-free
2PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) option releases growth factors over 1–2 weeks for sustained effect
3Treats acne scars, fine lines, large pores, melasma support, and overall skin texture
4Stronger results than microneedling alone — especially on rolling acne scars
5Most patients see meaningful improvement after the second of three sessions
6Safe across all skin types — no melanin targeting, low risk of hyperpigmentation

Common questions

Frequently asked

What is the difference between PRP and PRF microneedling?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is processed with anticoagulants and releases growth factors quickly. PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is processed without anticoagulants, creating a fibrin matrix that releases growth factors slowly over 1–2 weeks. PRF produces a more sustained effect — most patients prefer it for primary skin rejuvenation; PRP works well for combined hair + skin protocols.

Does PRP microneedling hurt?

Topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes before the procedure. Most patients describe the microneedling sensation as warm tapping or vibration. The PRP itself is anti-inflammatory and actually reduces post-treatment redness.

How many sessions do I need?

Most patients need 3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart for primary skin concerns, then annual maintenance. Significant acne scarring may need 4–6 sessions for full improvement.

What's the downtime?

24–48 hours of mild redness, similar to microneedling alone. Most patients schedule on a Friday and are presentable by Monday morning. SPF 30+ is essential for the first 7 days post-treatment.

PRP microneedling vs PRP injection?

PRP microneedling delivers growth factors topically through micro-channels — broader skin coverage, lighter dosing per area. PRP injection delivers a higher dose into a specific deeper site (under-eyes, hairline, joint). The two are different tools for different goals; we discuss which fits at consultation.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

Yes — microneedling doesn't target melanin, and PRP is autologous with no allergy or pigmentation risk. This makes PRP microneedling one of the safer collagen-induction options for Fitzpatrick IV–VI patients.
